What Can Massage Help With in Surprise, AZ?

By Corey Richason, Licensed Massage Therapist and owner of Vital Kneads Massage
Maybe your back feels fine on the front nine at Granite Falls, then starts talking to you on the back nine. Maybe your shoulder feels stiff after a morning of pickleball in The Grand. Or maybe your calves feel fine coming down from a White Tank hike, and then you get out of bed the next morning.
When someone comes into my studio in Surprise and says, “I’m tight,” I ask when they notice it. A back that gets stiff halfway through a round of golf gives me a different starting point than a back that aches after the drive home from Phoenix.
I’ve been doing massage since 2001. I still start with what you feel, when you feel it, and what you’d like to do more comfortably. Here’s where massage can fit into an active life in the West Valley.
1. It can ease some everyday aches
If your neck feels stiff every time you check your blind spot on Bell Road, that’s a useful detail to bring in. I might ask you to turn your head before we start, then check the same movement afterward. That tells us more about how the session went than how much pressure you could tolerate.
Massage may offer short-term relief for some types of pain, including low back pain and neck discomfort. I like to see what that relief means for something you actually do during the day.
2. It can make some movements feel easier
A golfer from The Grand might want to turn more comfortably through a swing. A pickleball player might notice stiffness reaching for a high ball. Both might describe it as “a tight shoulder,” but I’d ask each person to show me the movement that bothers them.
Depending on what you notice, I might use some focused massage, add assisted movement, and check that same motion again. Research on sports massage suggests a small benefit for flexibility. In my studio, the question is whether the movement you came in for feels any easier.
3. It may take the edge off post-workout soreness
The morning after a White Tank hike is when you find out how many stairs you have at home.
Sports massage may modestly reduce the soreness that shows up after hard exercise. If your calves are already tender from a long descent, I’ll adjust the pressure and pace to how they feel that day. If you’re bracing every time I touch your calf, that’s my cue to change what I’m doing.
4. It gives you some time to slow down
A day can start with an early tee time and still end with errands, traffic, and dinner to figure out. You can come in with a specific spot you want me to work on and still want an hour where nobody needs anything from you.
If you walk in with your shoulders halfway to your ears, I might start a little slower. You’re welcome to talk, ask questions, or enjoy the quiet. I’ll follow your lead.
5. You may feel more comfortable settling in at night
Some clients tell me they sleep better the night of a massage. Sometimes what they notice is as simple as being able to lie on their side without shifting around to get comfortable.
That’s worth mentioning next time. How you feel later that evening or the next morning helps me understand how the session landed.
How often should you get a massage?
Some of my clients like coming in about once a month. Others schedule around what they’re doing. Their pickleball league picks up, they start hiking again when the mornings cool off, or a familiar ache starts getting in the way.
I’d start by picking one thing to pay attention to after your session. How did your back feel on the last few holes? How did your calves feel going downstairs the morning after a hike? What did you notice on the drive home?
That gives us something specific to work with if you decide to come back. It also helps you decide whether massage is earning a spot in your routine.
If you’re in Surprise, The Grand, or elsewhere in the West Valley, tell me what you’d like to do a little more comfortably. That’s where I’ll start.
